I have recently been asked if there is a home test for hearing loss. Well the first order of business in that regard is to take a self evaluation of your auditory experience of the world. An experiential evaluation in day to day measure. If you are wondering if your hearing is being challenged or not if is not what it used to be or what you think it should be. Then just first take a simple personal inventory of your hearing life.

HERE ARE SOME DO YOU QUESTIONS. DO YOU?

  • have to strain to hear telephone conversation ?
  • have difficulty with hearing in restaurants?
  • have to strain to make sense of conversation?
  • have a go to ear for telephone conversation because you hear better with it?
  • have difficulty in conversation with 2 or more people who are talking simultaneously?
  • experience annoyance at others because you don’t understand or misunderstand what they say?
  • have some dizziness, ringing in your ears, pain?
  • have to ask others if they will repeat themselves frequently?
  • have misunderstanding of what has been said and respond inappropriately?
  • think that when people talk they are mumbling?
  • have people complaining because you listen to the TV at too high a volume?
  • get comments from people about your missing what’s been said?
  • have particular difficulty with hearing the things that women and children say?
  • have trouble hearing in places with a noisy background?

There is no passing grade or number of yes answers that should send you to professional testing. The point here was to make you more self aware of your hearing life. My experience is that when you have answered yes to several or certainly if you answer yes to the majority of these self posed questions then you should consider having an evaluation by a certified audiologist. You will then know your true level hearing and begin to examine if there are sudden hearing loss causes and symptoms treatment etc. You may find that it is father time wearing out some of your parts. what’s important is you will begin getting to hearing impaired causes. Are these conductive hearing loss signs symptoms ? The professional evaluation will be the first step to getting important questions answered.
